How To Do Wirless Focus Control With EAF And ASIAIR?

EAF Electronic Automatic Focuser is the latest innovation from the engineers at ZWO. We believe that it will greatly help with astrophotography. It not only supports various computer software in the market, with the cooperation of ASIAIR, it also enables precise and wireless focus control through the phone for planetary and deep-sky imaging.

Here is a simple guide about how to do that.

Step one:

Mount ASIAIR and EAF onto the telescope.

Step two:

Connect them with cables.

Connect ASIAIR first, then use a USB cable to connect EAF with ASIAIR. Don’t forget with the 12V power supply.

Step three:

Choose “Focuser Settings” in ASIAIR application and set the parameters. Set “Current Position” to 0, “Fine” to 10, and “Coarse” to 300.

You are free to experience wireless focus now. Press “Fine” or “Coarse”button along the left side of the screen to get precise focus control, and note the changes of the star in the preview box during this progress.

At last, let’s check how it will be like when you have mounted both ASIAIR and EAF.

You can photograph deep space at home, in your tent, in your car, or in anywhere as long as you can receive the wifi signal of ASIAIR! With ASIAIR and EAF, astrophotography is so easy!

How do automatic focusers work for SCTs? ZWO solution or is the Celestron auto focuser in the ASIAir list?

We have EAF focuser adapter for Celestron SCT feather touch, you can find it here.

Sorry to tell you ASIAIR does not support the third party focuser now.

An adapter for GSO RCs would be nice. I got it to work for myself but it is no simple task for average people.

I don’t see a difference in speed between fine and coarse when using the focus controls in ASIair. I set the fine steps to 10 and the coarse steps to 300 but the drive doesn’t turn any faster if I press the coarse button. I tried a coarse speed of 500 and 1000 and it still made no difference. Any suggestions on how to get this working properly? Thanks.

Hello! It’s really useless EAF for autofocusing in ASIAIR?
It’s is main featur of this tool and is still not working?

Sorry the ASIAIR PRO can’t autofocus so far, but our devs are considering putting this feature into ASIAIR PRO.

Please do more than consider, this is the only reason I got the EAF in the hope to have autofocus on the asiair in a future update.

Why is it that you have an EAF adapter for SCT’s with the Feathertouch focuser, but don’t have one for the standard focus knob? The RASA 8 doesn’t have the Feathertouch. It has a standard knob.

Sorry we currently don’t have a suitable adapter for the focus knob.

It is very difficult to get sharp images with Asiair and EAF. I am using a Bahtinov mask, but still it is clumsy. The responsiveness of the system (iPad control) is underwhelming. As long as there is no autocus routine available EAF is useless, so I went back to manual focuser control.
I don’t understand, why Zwo is not able to present a autofocus routine in Asiair pro until now. The mathematical principles are clear and programming should not be too difficult. I am really disappointed, because the promise of autocus was a main appointment for buying two EAFs.

I received my ASIAir Pro a couple weeks ago. I have the same problem as joegeiger above – it doesn’t matter what you enter in the fine and coarse settings. The focuser moves at the same speed (coarse) whether you press > or >>. I’ll add that fine control works as it should with the hand controller, meaning it is not a coupling issue (which are very tight). Any ideas?

You could post your problem on our forum with the picture to show how you set the fine and coarse settings. So that we can have a good look at this. Thank you.

Just received a new ASIAir Pro. I have the same problem as the one described below – fine and coarse settings in the iOS app have no effect. The focuser moves at the same speed whether I press > or >>. It is not the coupling because fine focus works as it should if I use the hand controller.

Any news on the autofocus feature being added in next release? Could the exposure time for focus be extended please? 10 seconds is not enough for narrowband filters. Thank you.

I hope this is a silly question. I currently have an ASI AIR PRO, ZWO 533MC, and am using a ZWO 120MC as a guide camera. I want to hook up (though I haven’t received it yet) a ZWO EAF to my scope as well. I’m using a USB thumb drive to store images. There are only four USB ports on the ASI AIR so I have the following: USB 3.0 ports are used by the 533MC and USB drive; the USB 2.0 ports are used by the mount (EQM-35PRO) and guide camera. Do I need a USB hub to use the EAF? …or can I use the two USB 2.0 ports on the ZWO 533 in some way?
    Thank you.

Yes, we recommend to use the two USB 2.0 ports on the ZWO 533.
