Since its release in 2018, the ASIAIR has been very well received. One of the things people enjoy the most is the GOTO accuracy. As long as your equatorial mount is one of the many that is supported then you to will have simple and accurate GOTO.
As one of the most popular mount brand in the world, SkyWatcher mount is widely used with ASIAIR. But how to connect these 2 devices?
There are two ways to connect your SkyWatcher mount to the ASIAIR.
1. Connect via serial port.
Connect the RJ – RJ232 (supplied with the mount) to the hand controller and the RS232 – USB cable supplied with the ASIAIR. This method does not require the purchase of any extra cables. In the ASIAIR App select SynScan when choosing your mount.
The EQ8 and other newer mounts do not require an adapter but can instead be connect via the hand controller straight to the ASIAIR with the cable supplied with mount.
If you prefer, you can connect from the SkyWatcher mount, straight into the ASIAIR, bypassing the hand controller. To use EQMOD, you need to purchase a third party, EQMOD dedicated cable. Another advantage to using EQMOD is you can skip the star alignment and go straight into plate solving.
In the ASIAIR App, select EQMOD when choosing your mount.
And how to connect SkyWatcher AZ-GTi Mount with ASIAIR?
The AZ-GTi is a great portable mount and works with the ASIAIR via not just EQMOD but also wireless EQMOD.
You can check the whole tutorial here for how to connect SkyWatcher AZ-GTi Mount with ASIAIR:

My mount is SkyWatcherEQ5 goto. I connedt EQ5 to ASIAIR via EQMOD.
I tried to use SkySafari while connecting mount via EQOD, but I can’t.
Please tell me How to use SkySafari while connenting mount via EQMOD.
Katherine Tsai
Actually there is no need to connect SS when you use ASIAIR.

Can ASIAIR work with AZ-GTi in alt-az mode (for plate solving only, not tracking) or it requires the equatorial wedge? Thanks!
Katherine Tsai
Yes it can.

My equipment: Skywatcher MAK127 AZ GoTo
Software used: SkySafari Pro
What I want: wireless connection to mount and camera
Is ASIAIR compatible? Which model?
Differences between ASIAIR and SKYFI III?
Thank you,
Moson
Yes, the ASIAIR is compatible with your mount. You could use RJ-RS232 to USB-RS232 to connect your mount with ASIAIR. And then set IP Address (e.g 10.0.0.1) and Port Number (e.g 4030) in SkySafari. Now you could use ASIAIR APP in your phone to contral the mount.
Maybe you could see the description on our website to see the differencs between ASIAIR and SKYFI III.

Hello,
The asiair pro is a wonderful tool. However I cannor connect it to my 10micron 1000hps. Neither wifi nore the cable works. Could you help me? Thanks in advance.

You could control the mount by connenting the net port on the ASIAIR PRO, then select ports 3490, 3492 in the software.

The asiAir pro will not recognize that the st-4 cable is connected between my asi120mm-mini and the iOptron skyguider pro when I select “on-camera-st4” on the mount selection. It says “connect failed: please open the guide camera first”. The guide camera is already connected and able to loop photos.
Do you know why it won’t recognize my mount? This works with other people’s setups. I based my setup from Peter Zelinka on YouTube and his doesn’t have that error message. I’ve tried iPhone iPad and android. Everything is on and the rest of the functions within the app work. If it doesn’t see my mount I’m afraid it won’t actually guide. Please help – I just spent a lot of money on this gear and this hiccough is rather frustrating.
Thanks in advance!
Moson
You could check the ST-4 cable whether it works fine and plugged tight. You could also try connect the guide camera to the ASIAIR Pro.

My hand control diésel not have USB port. Online 2x RJ
When trying the solutión you give (attached bellow ). i miss one cable. could you tell me wich is the cable for the Connection beetween handcontrol and the mount? And, how do you connect (RJ – RJ232) and the (RS232 – USB) since both are male?

Hello.
I have a NEQ6 PRO and after getting the ASIAIR PRO i am experiencing connection problems.
I have read the example of connection but i miss one cable on your advice . The One That goes from the synscan To the mount. What kind is it?
I an facing another problem on It. Is the fact that both rs232 cables (the mount one and the asiair one) are male. And you say that there is not need to get any other cable for this connection.
My Synscan model has not got the usb port.

These directions make little sense to me. I bought an EQ6-R last month. First the “original” cable that came with the mount and hand controller looks nothing like the diagram. It’s simply a phone jack on one end, plugged into the phone jack called “hand controller” on the mount. So I don’t see how one connects the ASIAir Pro with the cables under Scenario 1.
Second, why connect through the hand controller at all? What benefit is there? If you get a ISB 2.0 A to B (not supplied by ZWO) you plug in one end into the mount’s port and the other into the ASIAir Pro unit.
Simple. Why get complicated in these instructions?
Second,
Katherine Tsai
1. First, connect the hand controller to the mount, then connect the hand controller to ASIAIR USB port, you will need to convert the RJ port to USB port.
2. If connected via EQmod, it is easier, we recommend our customer to use this method.
James Pavlock
This still makes no sense to me.
I connected my NEW EQ6-R Pro Mount (which has a USB PORT) directly to the ASIAIR via a USB2 A -B cable. Since I have a USB port on the mount, I understand it DOESNT NEED an eqmod cable.
Nonetheless, until I inputed through my hand controller (which I also had to connect to the mount) the intro date, time, long lat etc, I couldn’t seem to control the mount by the asiair. Is this correct? That I still need to use the hand controller initially?
Do u have a complete tutorial on how to get started with ASIair?
Katherine Tsai
Yes, you are connecting EQ6R PRO in the right way. It needs to input the date, time, long lat, etc initially.
Martin Groen
Hey James
Also have a new eq6-r Pro and ASIAIR Pro. I´m wondering if you`d be so kind to share the settings you use on the ASIAIR Pro when you connect to the mount. I can’t seem to get a connection via the USB A-B which was not included in the box. I’ve had issues with the camera setups but have overcome them, no thanks to the manuals from ZWO. this last hurdle however is beginning to make me a bit disappointed. When I try and search for connection options in the drop down menus there are no “usb to mount” options.
Do you know af any good tutorial online for aid?
Thanks. Hope you fixed your issues.

Gonzalo, I had the same problem. It looks like the EQ6 has a new USBSERIAL driver that is not included in the current ASAIR distribution. As a workaround just get an EQMod cable. I just let ZWO support know this today so hopefully they get the updated kernel with the driver soon.
Don’t blame ZWO, even SkyWatcher seems unaware of this HW change in the EQ6.

I connected my EQ6R-r Pro mount to the asiair via usv2 cable.
I still had to use the mount’s hand controller to do intro date, time, long, lat. why?
So I used the hand controller to input this info and the asiair app is showing, in Telescope Settings, a value for RA of 20h 21m 20s, even though my mount is in its home position and the entire mount is pointed directly at Polaris. Dec is 00 00 00. Why is this? I haven’t polar aligned yet. Is this RA value an error?
Katherine Tsai
We have released ASIAIR PRO manual.https://astronomy-imaging-camera.com/manuals/ASIAIR_PRO_User_Manual.pdf
It needs to input the date, time, long, lat, and do three-star alignment initially.

Hi, just purchased ASIair Pro. I’m using a Skywatcher EQ5 SynScan mount, Evoglide-59ED guidescope with a ZWO ASI Mini camera.
Controlling the app thru an ipad
I can’t get my telescope to communicate with the app for PA and plate solving. D I need to buy a special cable or maybe change the settings?
One of the error messages I get is that I need to PA and 3 star align 1st? I thought that was one of the main advantages of this app?
Please advise
Katherine Tsai
Are you connecting ASIAIR and mount via hand controller? Please connect the hand controller to the mount first and then connect the hand controller to ASIAIR USB port via RS232 cable.

Can I use ASIair with Orion’s XT10g (Dobsonian, goto, alt-az) ? It has a synscan hand controller. It also supports WiFi. Thank you !
ZWO.Moson
Sorry we don’t have test this mount. But you could try connect the synscan with ASIAIR via USB cable, and choose “Orion Atlas/HDX/Sirius” in the app drop-down menu options.
Jeanine
Equipment is Rasa 11, skywatcher EQ6-pro, ASI 294. I’m having a few problems.
After polar aligning, the goto function doesn’t consistently take me to a requested target. How can this be consistent and The target centered?
The photos are in black and white (not color). Is there a setting in ASIAIR pro to get photos in color and to accurately goto target each time?
Also the photos are jpegs when transferred from thumb drive to the computer. Are raw files not available in ASIAIR pro?
Thanks for your help.
ZWO.Moson
1.Check the EQ6-pro has been balanced before polar aligning, and the mount is in zero position before connect the power. Check the “Tracking” has been opened. Also open the option “GoTo Auto-Center” and click the “Sync to Mount”.
2.Close the “Mono bin”
3.The photos taken by ASIAIR PRO are Fit files format. The ASIAIR PRO supports RAW files.

I have an EQM-35 Pro and have not been able to connect in any manner other than ST4. I am able to connect my Canon Camera (5dsr) and guidescope (120mm-s). I was able to do a polar alignment, but I could not get the connection to the mount via any of the skywatcher synscan options. There is no USB connection option only a serial connection option or Ethernet. What is the point of having a newer mount if it can’t be recognized by the latest firmware I assume 5.81. It appears that you recommend purchasing an EQMOD cable. Does the SynScan still have to be connected to the mount for location and date adjustments? Does the EQMOD cable simply connect from the asiair to the mount’s autoguiding port, and do you have to disconnect the SynScan after inputting the information. Thanks.
ZWO.Moson
1.Yes, you need an EQMOD cable. When you connect the mount and ASIAIR via EQMOD cable, you do not need adjust the location and date.
2.The EQMOD cable directly connect from the ASIAIR to the mount’s handcontrol port.
3.Do not need connect the SynScan.
jlmkeschmitz
Do you have a recommended EQMOD cable? I have a cable but I guess it’s not the correct cable.
Memory Ji
You can search the EQMOD cable to connect PC, it also works to ASIAIR;-)

I have a EQ3 mount and eqmod cable. I plugged the cable into the sync scan controller and the other end is asiair. In the asiair app, I selected [EQ MOD with sky safari] and baud is 9600, serial rs232. Unfortunately, I cannot connected
Could you tell what has been wrong in this setup? Thanks
ZWO.Moson
You can try select [EQMod Mount].

Hello everyone, I would ask for help and information about the following: I use the NEQ6-R Pro with USB plug in, the ASI AIR, the ASI120M as my guiding camera and either the Nikon D810a or the ASI1600M plus EFW as imaging device. Focussing is done with the EAF.
Now the questions: When I connect the ASIAIR with the handcontroller and set the scope to Skywatcher SynScan, it works fine as long as I do not start the guiding routine – then the mount starts to move away and calibration does not work (ST-4 cable connected from ASI120 to NEQ6). When I set the mount to ST-4 on camera, the mount does not move but guiding calibration and operation is very fine. So either I can control the mount or the guiding, not both.
Next problem: When I use the ASI1600M plus EFW, the focus changes of course, when I switch from L to R oder Ha or whatever. I do not see any possiblilty to set a different focus position for the ASI EAF in the ASIAIR menu. Did I miss something? Focus must be adjusted because the image in L is sharp and with Ha or OIII ist blurred – not much, but it is definetly not in focus.
Of course, when I use the NIkon D810a, that problem does not exist – only the fact, that there is no temperature compensation for the possible focus change when the temperature is dropping during the night.
Well, are these the limitation of that tiny system? Then I have to live with it. But the inability to use guiding when the mount is set to Skywatcher SynScan should have a solution, I think. Maybe I connected something wrong.
Can you please advise me?
Thanks!
ZWO.Moson
1.You do not need connect the ST-4 port to ASIAIR, you only need connect it via USB cable to ASIAIR. And then choose EQmod on the ASIAIR app.
2.You did not miss something, we will add the auto focus function in the next version of ASIAIR. And it will release in the near future.

Hi, I’ve read I need to use an EQMOD cable to connect my Skywatcher EQ3 mount to ASI AIR PRO.
Is it possible to connect this Skywatcher Synscan EQ3 Mount using the wifi adapter?
I followed the procedure written for AZ GTI wi-fi, but it doesn’t work.

ZWO.Moson
Sorry it can’t connect with WIFI adapter.

Hi,
Does the ASIAir include the necessary FTDI drivers for the EQMod Cable to function? I have an EQMod cable I use with my HEQ5 but I had to install drivers on my laptop for the cable to work. Or is it that I just got a cheap cable (it was $4.99 but works great once the drivers were installed) that required the drivers separately? I ordered an ASIAir but want to make sure I don’t have issues with EQMod.
Also, I’ve seen some using Bluestacks on a PC\Laptop with Windows to emulate iOS and run the ASIAir App and SkySafari. But I would assume there is still no way to tie it in with the Windows Based versions of Stellarium or Astrophotography tool? I have the Synscan Wifi adapter but saw in other post where the response was no go with ASIAir. It would be great if ASIAir could share the Synscan Wifi Adapter with a Laptop via the WiFi connection. Others would say it defeats the purpose but I love Stellarium but also the functionality of the ASIAir App.
Thanks!
ZWO.Moson
There is no any drivers required in using EQMod function.
Yes, the ASIAIR can not be tied in with the Windows Based versions of Stellarium or Astrophotography tool.
Sorry the ASIAIR PRO can not work with Synscan Wifi adapter, but we will convey your feedback to our des, and they will consider this.

I have just bought an iOptron CEM70G. I have setup an old PC running Windows 10 2020 with the ASCOM Platform, IOptron Commander, iPolar, PDH2 and just need a clear night!
I like the all in one ASIair approach though. A few questions
1. Is the CEM70G supported and if so what is the best way to connect to it? The built in iPolar and iGuide cameras are accessible on the CEM70G main USB 3.0 port.
2. Is the built in iPolar camera (basically a Windows HD camera (1280 x 960)) supported
3. Same question for the iGuide
Apart from that happy to use ZWO cameras on the Celestron Edge HD 8”
Many Thanks
Phil
ZWO.Moson
Yes, the ASIAIR PRO support CEM70G. You can connect the mount to ASIAIR PRO via USB port, select CEM40 in the AIR app, baud 115200.
But sorry to tell you that ASIAIR PRO does not support the build in iPolar or iGuide.
Ashley Powell
Why are the instructions for using the ASIAir Pro with the NEW EQ6R-Pro so vague? You really need to create a step by step guide for such a critical item rather than having vague guides and conflicting answers.
I have the mount connected to the Air via the mounts USB port. Do I need the hand controller? You seem to imply “yes” in some answers above. Why?
I need to select “EQMod” as the mount “type” in the ASI App, is this correct?
What is the correct connection, setup and startup process when using the EQ6R-Pro? (exactly)
ZWO.Moson
Sorry for the inconvenience. We can’t create such a clearly guide due to the ASIAIR PRO supports a huge number of mounts.
You do not need hand controller when connect the mount to the ASIAIR PRO via the USB port. And select “EQMod” in the ASIAIR app, baud 115200.

Hi, I have a problem with asi air pro.
I currently use an eq5 pro mount, connected through the eqmod cable.
Everything works well, I can solve without any problem, I center the object very precisely, but I never finish a session because the mount always makes the optics slam on the telescope tripod.
I checked the date and coordinates and they are correct, I use the latest version of asiair pro. What am I doing wrong?
Thanks in advance

I received a new EQ6-R Pro and ASIAIR Pro last week. I’m having trouble connecting them using a USB cable. I have tried setting EQMod Mount and 115200 baud in the ASI settings with my USB cable connected to the mount and also to the Synscan USB port but it will not recognize the mount. I did figure out that I can use Skywatcher Synscan with the USB cable connected to the Synscan controller after a start alignment. However, I would like to use the mount without the controller. What do I need to do to get the ASI app to recognize the EQ6 on EQMod Mount setting?

Hi
I’ve just received my ASIAIR pro.
2 questions regarding connecting it properly with my sw eq6-pro mount
1. I believe not all cables usb->rs232 are fine to use? From what I can see USB to RS232 COM FTDI FT232RL should work fine and connect?
2. How do I connect guiding? Can see the todo anywhere. I use zwo asi 120mm mini. Do I need to use rj12 from my camera to mount? Or use usb to rj12 adapter so I connect usb to ASIAIR pro and rj12 to my guiding mount? Or I don’t connect anything and the connection from point 1 does the trick and enables the guiding? And I only select eqmod?
Support@ZWO
1.Just 1 eqmod cable needed.
2.Please use USB directly connect asi 120mm mini to ASIAIR pro and we recommend eqmod.

I think I want to completely skip the HC and just don’t use it at all.
So I’ve ordered a dedicated eq6 pro eqmod cable. Then I connect it to usb in ASIAIR and eqmod on my eq6. That’s it? It will then control both the mount and the guiding, just 1 cable needed in this case to control both?
Support@ZWO
Yes, just 1 cable needed.

For anyone having issues with the EQ6-R PRO please look at the following link https://gist.github.com/timucingelici/217ac492bc2b127c6645ce033463d265
I have had similar issues to many other connecting directly to my mount using the usb a to usb b cable, i have been able to update my hand controller firmware and my mount firmware but am unable to connect it to eqascom on the pc. I have also been unable to connect to the asi air pro using every setting possible.
It appears the culprit is a new version of the prolific serial converter chipset that has been installed on the mount and is not yet supported by the asi air i also suspect my pc driver will not be up to date as well.
The link above mentions a way around the issue but is a risky and complicated process. Until an update for the air fixes the issue people with the new chipset like myself will just have to buy an eqmod cable.
For a deeper explanation from my understanding the usb port on the latest mount version has an inbuilt serial converter that automatically converts the high level instructions from your pc etc into low level ones for the motor control board. Therefore if its a new chipset thats not fully supported as yet the easiest fix is an eqmod cable as i understand it has its own converter built into the cable. This should only be on the latest versions of the mount supposedly.
Feel free to correct me but thats what iv found after the last 5 days of searching

Hello,
I can’t connect my Asiair pro to my NEQ6 mount. I tried to connect it to the serial port of the mount (named “hand controller”). Then I choose the EqMOd mount (9600bauds) in the asiair app. The Serial is showed as “connected” but I get an error “connect failed …”.
When I try to connect the asiair to the synscan (v3), I’ve got the same problem.
Note: on the other hand, I can connect the Asiair pro with my ASI120 and AIS533 cameras.
Do you have a solution ?

This is so disappointing…I can not connect to my EQ6-R Pro with ASIAir Pro. I have ordered the EQMOD cable but have tried connecting USB A to USB B on the hand controller. Still connection fails, says it’s connected but when I turn it on if fails to connect. I have a very popular mount and ASI cameras and ASI Air Pro seems very popular but still the documentation and support seems extremely poor. Maybe SkyWatcher and ASI could talk to each other and work this out, just saying! I sure wish I had read this thread prior to my purchase.
Wouldn’t it be some much better to just include the EQMOD cable with the device, really how many power cables do I need? The vast majority of this whole thread addresses this one problem which could be solved with one cable! I’ll pay more to get all the cables I need, including power supply! Really…NO POWER SUPPLY!
This is not a confidence builder, maybe NINA or SharpCap are better solutions with the added benefit of using any camera I want! Why would I buy a $5000 camera from a company that can’t handle the small stuff!
Shaking my head!

I’m having a new problem with communication between my ASI AIR PRO and mount. I’m using the PRO connected to the hand controller jack on my EQM-35 PRO. Everything worked extremely well for a couple of months but while shooting the last three or four nights, the AIR seems to stop communicating with the mount. I’ve changed the EQMOD cable and I’ve even reinstalled the AIR operating system. I can shoot a couple of rounds of photographs of one object but when I try to get the mount to slew to a new target, the slew screen pops up but nothing happens. It won’t even go to home position. The only way to get the mount to move is to turn the AIR off, then back on, manually move the mount to home position, the turn everything back on. Quite frustrating.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Support@ZWO
Please submit the log in APP feedback when the issue occur before turn the AIR off.

Hello again,
the ASIAIR (not pro) is compatible with Onstep and Arduino? I´ve EQ3 mount dual axis with nano arduino and use the Stellarium or Cart du Ciel to move the telescope with ST4 port.. Thank you.
sara.liu
The ASIAIR is compatible with the Onstep, but not sure of the Arduino.

I am sorry, it’s a DISASTER.
Given how popular the SW EQ6 mount is i can’t understand how is it possible that is put several hundred bucks into both the ASIAIR and the mount and THEY DO NOT WORK together.
OK, i can wait a few weeks… but it’s been HALF A YEAR. Seriously, any app in my phone gets updated faster. So why do i have to order cables, browse forums and keep waiting… i thought the “U” in “USB” stands for “universal”??

Hello,
I have the older EQ6 PRO running synscan V4.
purchasing a ASI air Pro, and 2 cameras, I wish to skip the hand controller….
I purchased a EQMOD cable, but am uncertain it has the right connections on it.
i looked at
https://astronomy-imaging-camera.com/wp-content/uploads/17.png
but if I use the cables provided by ZWO ASI air pro box, it can no longer be connected to the mount.
complete setup help required, as the connections aren’t lining up as your diagrams indicate.
and forum posts are not illumating my problem.
sara.liu
Please contact the mount with the ASIAIR Pro USB port directly by using the EQMOD cable.

Hello support team
Is Bresser Exos 2 mount meanwhile also possible to be connected to asiair (not pro version) ?
I read in another forum that it is supported now
Is this true?
Thank you in advance
Best regards
Rolf

The ASIAIR is not compatible with Bresser Exos 2 mount.

I don’t know if it is a bug but if you are using the first methof, conecting serial port, and you are getting problems, first of all I would recommend to play with the baud rate.
In my case some times works fine al 9600 bauds and others with 11500, and if one works, the other don’t.
I’m using asiair with an Skywatcher eq8.
Cheers
sara.liu
9600 or 115200 depends on the mount protocol, please refer to mount manual.

Hi, Is the Saxon HEQ5 Pro mount supported? I tried to connect and it said mount not identified. I connected with a USB A – USB B male-male from the ASIAIR Pro to the hand controller ( I don’t have an RJ-RS232 cable). The hand controller was connected to the mount. I selected ‘Skywatcher Synscan’ from the drop down menu for the mount. Is this the right selection for a Saxon HEQ5 Mount using Synscan?
If not, will eqmod direct from asiair to the hand controller port on my mount work? Thanks.
sara.liu
Skywatcher synscan needs the star Align, you can refer to the tips in ASIAIR app, recommend the EQMOD.

My equipment, AZ-EQ5 Pro Skywatcher mount, Nikon D750, Skywatcher Quattro 200P, ASIAir Pro, When I use the EqMod Cable (option 3), I cannot control the time on the AZ-EQ Mount, so when i go to an object it seems to be an hour off and does not line up with the selected object. It is greyed out in the app and cannot be adjusted in the app,
So in order to set the time, I went back to option 1 and try to keep the Skysafari in the loop so I can set the time with Skysafari, but when I connect to the mount using the ASIair App, using the Skywatcher synscan option, i get a Connection Failed message “Polar and 3 star aligned required and please update the HC FW to the newest version…..”
My preference is to use the EQMod Cable option. What workarounds are there for getting the time correct on the mount.
sara.liu
It is possible to use the EQMod cable option.
Please check the Time Zone and time option, then sync to mount to get the correct time; )

Hi,
I am trying to connect using method 1 and am not succeeding.
The mount I am using is a SkyWatcher AZ-EQ5 GT.
I know the cable works because I was able to update the SynScan Hand Controller.
However, no matter which USB port I use on the ASIAIR I am unable to connect, getting the error:
Can’t Connect. Polar and 3-Stars align required and please update the HC FW to the newest version, or check the connection of the USB cable.
The telescope I have selected is: SkyWatcher SynScan.
Thanks.
sara.liu
If your cable has nothing wrong, can connect to the PC,
please submit the log in the ASIAIR app.

Hi there! I have the SW EQ6-R Pro, which has the USB-A port.
1. I tried connecting the ASIAIR PRO with a USB A-B cable, but I got en error that there is no device connected to the serial port (or smth like this, I don´t remember the exact words). I saw a video tutorial with this type of connection and it worked (the guy just selected EQ Mod mount with 115200 baud). What could be the problem with my rig?
2. Should I try the EQ mod cable? And is the USB-to-RJ45A cable safe for the mount? I read something about the voltage and how it could damage the mount if connected directly to a USB port… (not sure about this, but wanted to make sure)
Thanks a lot!

Buonasera.

The mount can be connected directly by EQMOD cable.
