Discovery Astrophotography with ZWO ASTRO

What is ASIStudio and What Can It Bring Us?

ASIStudio

What’s ASIStudio?

ASIStudio is an astronomy software package developed by ZWO, which currently including ASICap, ASIImg and ASILive.

  • ASICap——specialized in planetary imaging, with an earlier release date, has experienced multiple iterations and gains a lot of popularity.
  • ASIImg —— specialized in DSO imaging for desktop platform, is a great attempt to create a software by our years’ experience on development.
  • ASILive—— specialized in live stacking. The first beta version was released at Nov 2019, is a strong competitor in live stacking software, also get many good reputations.

With this software, the future of ASIStudio is quite clear: ASIStudio will be a unified software package including all the imaging and post-processing work. Combined with popular ASI camera, a full-featured ecosystem for astrophotography will be built.

You don’t need to learn other complexity software, ASIStudio will be enough for you.

ASICap

ASICap is the first software in this collection, can be used for planetary, solar and lunar imaging. The UI is quite straightforward, you could easily adjust parameters, such as resolution, exposure time and gain. The software won’t let you miss a single clear night to take images.

ASICap-en

ASIImg

ASIImg is the latest software in this collection. Currently could be used for DSO imaging with/without scheduled task. We plan to add sky chart, assist polar align, focusing and plate-solving in future versions in this year. Ultimately, it’s gonna meet all the demands for DSO imaging.

The development progress of ASIImg is steady, thanks to the experience for developing ASIAIR.

ASIImg-英文

ASILive

ASILive is focused on live stacking. You could see the image stacked in real time with stretch and denoise automatically. A no-brainer experience for imaging.

Surprisingly, due to the convenient and easy to use of the software, ASILive has drawed attention from the fans of EAA.

ASIlive-叠加109-英文

Live stacking, 109 frames stacked

What can ASIStudio bring us:

As a newborn software platform, ASIStudio is far from its ultimate goal. There are already many mature software, such as FireCapture, SharpCap, Maxim DL and NINA. You will be impressed if you are specializing some of these software.

But ASIStudio has its own advantages:

1.Completely complimentary

Like earlier software developed by ZWO, ASIStudio is also complimentary. You can download the software from any appropriate platform. Although ASIStudio only supports ASI camera, but we think most astronomy amateurs have at least one ASI camera. So, it is not a disadvantage.

2.Better support for ASI cameras

ASIStudio will be more robust because we focused on support our own cameras.

3.Easier learning curve

There are all kinds of astronomy imaging software, but most have a quite steep learning curve. ASIStudio is more user friendly because it has a simple, intuitive UI and more convenient operations.

4.More specialized software

Instead of integrating planetary/Solar/Lunar imaging, DSO imaging and Live stacking in one software, ASIStudio separates them into 3 individuals which can run independently: ASICap, ASIImg and ASILive. Some new features are under development, such as FITS viewer, will also been added as a gadget. This means you don’t need to download the entire software package for just a single feature (For example, purchase and download Maxim DL to view a FITS file). More flexibility for customers to imaging and post-processing.

5.Cross platform support

ASIStudio currently supports Windows 32-bit/64-bit, macOS, Linux (64-bit only). A great news for Linux and macOS customers.

The future of ASIStudio

ASIStudio is a long-term software project for desktop platform. We will keep shaping the software and add more features over time. We also keep a close eye on other great astronomy software, we may integrate it into our package after received their authorizations.

ASIStudio will become a full-featured, one-stop astrophotography software package, including the software developed by ourselves, gadgets and authorized third party software. ASIStudio will become the best solution for astronomy amateurs. We will make the astrophotography easier than never before.

When we start developing ASIStudio, someone told to us, we will never catch up the pace with software like SharpCap. Even some of our competitors stop developing similar software, as they think it is a totally waste of time. We know we have a vast gap from mature software, but it’s just a beginning.

As proven said: “Rome wasn’t built in a day”. A software project cannot become perfect from in a short time. We will never catch up the pace with others if we afraid of facing the failure. ZWO is working hard on astrophotography for 8 years, we will never give up.

We value your opinion!

To make ASIStudio better, we cherish your precious advices very much. If you have any feedback and suggestions, please do not hesitate to tell us via Facebook Messenger or E-mails.

After downloading ASIstudio I was very pleased and surprised by the ease and functionality of the software. As a user of several of the popular imaging and stacking systems this one validates my skills as a deep sky imager and takes much of the work out of getting really good images. As I have read that you plan to integrate a star chart and other features that only work with AS I cameras is not a disadvantage. In fact it is a plus and thus far ZWO is a proven leader in this field of work/hobby. Keep up the great work.

    Hello,
I am totally new to this astro game. Today I will take receipt of 2 asi cameras.
I have downloaded the asi studio software and have been looking through it.

I have great difficulty reading the red on the black. I know why its red, but wonder can it be changed within the program to a different contrast. At present my eyes cannot read it.

    Thanks

I’m enjoying ASI Studio a lot. Very elegant design.

Is it possible to autoguide in the Deep Sky and Stacking modes? I only see the guiding icon in the ASIcap mode.

P.S. I have my 183MC and my 290mini. Now, when is that ASIair Pro going to arrive (ordered April 1)…?

Sorry it can’t autoguide in the Deep Sky and Stacking modes at present. We still need third party guiding software. But our devs are considering to put this feature in ASIStudio.
Could you tell me where did you buy the AIR PRO? And the order number? We will arrange the delivers as soon as possible.

When I use de deep sky mode (img) it says the cooler is off. In Asicap (planetary) mode, I can switch on the cooler ON and set the temperature. In DSO mode there is a setting for temperature, but the cooler is OFF? Any method to have the cooler ON in deep sky mode?
    Thanks!

    Love ASI cameras!

One feature I noticed in SharpCap is the ability for the histogram to include only a portion of the image. Is this option considered for Studio or ASIAir? Even histograms of several areas might be useful. It’s the first I’ve heard of this feature, but it seems to me that it could be very useful. I’m interested in others thoughts.

Today I downloaded ASIStudio from you website and tried to install it on my MACBook, but received an error message saying it would not install for security reasons as it came from an unknown website and directed me to the Apple App Store, which, of course, does not have this. Use the Control- right click key combination to Open anyway – or go to Preferences and allow the Mac to open the software. This is not related to ASI software per se but is the default security setting.

You can open finder, then go to wherever the file you downloaded is stored (usually downloads) and right click then file and choose open, this will then warn you but allow you to run it anyway 🙂

    Hi everyone,

    I have ZWO ASI224MC.
I finished the pre-test check during the day and was capturing the full
moon in the evening when I ran into a problem and got an image.
It’s hard to proceed with the image capture.

A few days ago, I set a ground target for my laptop with the previous
    version of ASI Stuido V1.0.1
WIN10, 64bit . The image capture went well and saved as expected.

And the same laptop with ASI224MC to shoot the full door next evening.
I ran ASICap after I ran it, but my laptop only has a black screen and no
    moon surface.
I checked the connection configuration with the laptop and ASI224MC
and even double-checked it, but the laptop is still a black screen.

I checked the connectivity between the laptop and ASI224MC, and even
if I touch this and that, the laptop is still on the black screen.
When the camera is separated from the ceiling mirror and facing around,
the screen of the laptop reacts white.
Is it out of focus? I just couldn’t figure out why.
Please let me know the cause and solution.

And yesterday, ASICap screen looks like attached picture, and it doesn’t
    go back to full screen.
Touch and run the ASIImg icon next to it to display the full screen immediately.
What is the reason for this? solution method Please let me know.

What changed a few days ago was that the pop-up was upgraded to the
latest version of V1.1.2 (64bit) when ASI Studio ran pop-up.

    Thanks,

    N.S.Kim

The “Save As” feature in the ASIFitsView application is very clunky. It does not allow me to save in folders other than the current folder where the images are saved. Also, the default file name should update as I move between images in the folder and not default to the first image that I opened. The file type drop down should list jpg and png separately and add .png or .jpg automatically so that I don’t have to manually type the extension.

I am VERY interesting in using the ASI Studio and I am totally loving my ASI2600MC-Pro and 290Mini. How does ASI Studio (installed on a Win 10 laptop) connect to the ASIAIR-Pro? Can it be connected via USB or does it have to be wireless? Is there any estimated time frame for an instruction manual? A lot of the program is very intuitive but an instruction manual is always a good thing. Thanks the support and for creating so many wonderful products.

How is the ASISTUDIO manual coming along? I need help with gain/offset/stacking etc. and I think the manual would help. Last post I saw about it was September…Should be done by now,no?

He instalado el ASIStudio.

    Hi
I downloaded ASIStudio today but when I try to launch it on my windows 120 (64bit) laptop I get the blue wheel for a few seconds then nothing happens. Each of the 3 programs will launch and work, justmnot the ASIStudio part. Any ideas?

    Thanks!

      Hello

Is it doing it on Mac OS ?
      Yes

It is unable to connect&control the AVX or EQ6R directly currently in the ASIstudio
we will convey this requirement to our R&D

Hi. Just loaded ASI Studio for my ZWO1600MM Pro.

Using ASIImg for Deep Sky Imaging, can you tell me the actual Gain settings for Low/Middle/High?
Can these Gain settings be changed?
There is no control of Offset. Is this set automatically depending upon Gain setting chosen?
    Can it be set manually?

    Very impressed so far.

    Regards, Peter

You do not need to set the gain and offset manually. We recommend keep the default gain and offset, especially for the new users.

I have the same question to bulk-save auto-stretched FITS to jpeg . Saving one by one is just too stupid.

      Low = Highest dynamic range
      High = lowest read noise

Hello, Katherine. I’m a new ASI user, now with ASI2600MC Pro and ASIAir. Is there a manual available? And is it possible to save images in TIFF? Only specialized applications, not Photoshop, will read FITS.

I have used an ASI120 camera for planetary imaging. I used ICap 2.4 to capture the images. More recently, I have attempted to use an ASI294 cooled colour camera to take deep sky images. I have downloaded ASIStudio. Although I can use ASICap to take test images of bright objects, I cannot get ASIImg to run. When I click on the ASIImg icon, it just brightens momentarily but then nothing more happens. When I also click on ASILive, I get the same result: the icon brightens for a moment, but nothing else happens.

Any advice on how to get past this step would be greatly appreciated.

I have tried to run ASI studio Deepstack with fit data on two different Mac computers including a brand new Mac mini. The program progresses fine but just as it completes the final stacking, the program crashes. Any thoughts on what I am doing incorrectly?

The root directory of log files is “~/Library/Application Support/ASIDeepStack”. If you cannot find the “Library” folder, use Command(⌘) + Shift(⇧) + . to display hidden files and folders. After you have the deepstack log, please submit in https://support.astronomy-imaging-camera.com/

    Hello,

I am new to astrophotography and the ASIStudio suite and very easy to learn. Well done to the developer for their work. And it is possible to inculcate a feature that allows you to clear the sky of all clouds at night 😉

Good luck to the ZWO team

Are your programmers continuing their development of this ambitious software suite? The early announcement sounded very promising, but there seems to be few advancements since then.

Thank you for what you’ve done so far!

    Hello,
I own several ASI products, all controlled via ASIAIR. Would the studio software somehow link up with the ASIAIR or will this only work with the tablet? I would like to use studio, but wirelessly from the comfort of inside the house. That is why I got the ASIAIR… but running the controlling software on a desktop seems more convenient. Thanks!

The ASIStudio can be run via desktop, it can not be controlled via ASIAIR.

    Hi ASI folks,

I am using a ASI183MM Pro camera and wanted to shoot Darks today through ASIIMG on my Mac laptop. However I cannot set the gain to the exact vale (111) at which I shot my Lights. The only setting options for the camera gain ASIIMG gives me are „Low“, „Medium“ and „High“. Am I missing something? Or have you just not yet implemented precise gain settings in ASIIMG? In that case it would be very useful to add this feature.

For my imaging sessions I am using an ASIAIR Pro, which allows for precise setting of the gain value.

    Best regards,

    Reinhard

ASIImg currently can only set three levels of “low”, “medium” and “high”, because for DSO, it is enough. But for the further needs, we will optimize the software, after the gain will add a custom feature that allows the users to set the specific value. In the current situation, we recommend you to use ASICap to shoot, the ASICap can set any gain.

WOW, this article really needs to be redone.. that pic shows only 3 icons? the newest version as of this week for ME, is Much better with more options , like 5 now .. Planetary Imaging, Deep Sky Imaging, Live Stacking, Fits Voewer and Deek Sky Stacking .. are all the options available a year later.. I Hope they rewrite this article and leave a link to it from this one…

    hello,
which file types are supported in ASI Deep stack? I imaged through a Sony mirrorless with .arw format. But ASI Deep stack can not recognise those light rames, dark frames e.t.c. captured through Sony?

Really enjoy the software but would like to have the ability to dither between exposures and a Bahtinov Focus Mask tool similar to Sharpcap. You add plate solving and I would not need another piece of software for image image acquisition

It is already in the demand pool, will be gradually realized in the future.
